About
It all started when…
Radha Blank knew the story she had to tell was something that would keep the culture alive.
The emcee, director and storyteller shared her life perspective through her new Sundance winning Netflix film “The 40-Year-Old Version” which discussed the life of Radha trying to figure her playwright career while also becoming a rapper at 40.
“It’s always been about the writing for me. Hip Hop is a meditation,” Blank said.
She discussed how the story of her playwright journey and her rap journey were intertwined with each other simply because she wanted to use her words to tell stories of real-life situations that people of color can relate to.
“If you have a pen, come on in,” she said. There was an emphasis on the importance and value storytellers need to have within themselves when in an industry such as this one.
The tone of truth bled through the film as the scenery of black and white kept the raw and authentic feeling. Blank expressed how she wanted this film to be a part of the conversation of speaking up and standing in the truth no matter the age, race, sexuality or gender.
The overall theme that could be taken away from this is that there is no limit on following a dream and pursuing a passion.
As she shared her wisdom to the students of Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College, students felt her passion and determination for this film
“Make your film, even if it’s not on film,” she said.
