It all started when…
“You can buy number ones on Billboard,” according to rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine. The rapper has accused singers Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber to the act of buying their song “Stuck With U” the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
The battle for the number one song on the Hot 100 charts has been extremely competitive for the past few weeks especially with the return of artist Tekashi 6ix9ine after he made his hiatus from the music industry. With the release of his song “GOOBA” the rapper began to gain a large amount of engagement through streaming numbers and social media.
Recently, the rapper called out Billboard for allegedly cheating him out of his number one song. After the updated Hot 100 charts were revealed that “GOOBA” debuted at number three on Billboard. The rapper began his social media rant of the alleged billboard scandal and accused Grande’s team to purchasing 60,000 units of music. “They purchased half of those with six credit cards,” 6ix9ine said.
After the blame was placed throughout the day, Ariana Grande released a statement through Instagram. “u can not discredit this as hard as u try. to anybody that is displeased with their placement on the chart this week or who is spending their time racking their brain thinking of as many ways as they can to discredit hardworking women (and only the women for some reason.....), i ask u to take a moment to humble yourself,” Grande wrote in her Instagram caption as she addressed the recent allegations.
The conversation that has been created through this massive situation is whether the numbers have tainted the music industry. A situation such as this showed how consumed artists seem to get with the numbers that they forget about the importance and impact of the music.
Overall, the music industry has evolved into something that shows how much of a fight artist are willing to put up in order to have their voice heard no matter the circumstances.
