  1. Anthony Anderson’s Entertaining Approach as an opener:

    • Emmy Nominated actor Anthony Anderson was able to get the crowd extremely engaged with his sketch of trying to find the best host for the Emmy’s, he was able to keep an upbeat energy throughout the crowd and overall gave the people something to hold on to and want to continue watching the show. The opening was extremely theatrical and full of laughter and energy which got the crowd going and excited.

  2. Ava DuVernay snubbed for Best Director Category:

    • Director Ava DuVernay was not the winner for the Best Director category at the Emmy’s which raises many different questions within the academy; the most important one being, Do they really see us? There was a major surprise when not hearing her name being called as the winner when her limited series When They See Us was such a huge success and created a major conversation when dealing with injustices within the nation. Even though DuVernay did not win for this category she was able to win so much more such as getting the story of the Exonerated Five out for the world to know.

  3. Jharrel Jerome wins for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie:

    • Known for his impeccable performance as Korey Wise from the limited series When They See Us actor Jharrel Jerome takes home the Emmy for Best Actor in a Limited series which filled the world with so much joy knowing that he won for such a memorable performance. Jerome was filled with a great amount of gratitude and excitement during his speech while ending with thanking and honoring the Exonerated Five; Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, and Antron McCray. This shows that this was not just a win for Jerome, but this was a win for the Exonerated Five and also to the world that these stories can be told, remembered, and impactful.

  4. The Game of Thrones cast reunites on stage:

    • One of the most beloved cast were able to reunite on the Emmy stage to reflect on what an impactful series Game of Thrones was throughout the years. The audience was extremely enthusiastic to see their favorite characters reunited as if nothing has changed which was extremely refreshing for the viewers to see. While taking a trip down memory lane the cast was able to reflect on how this series was able to bring so many different people together and have such a powerful impact where everyone can reflect on the highs and lows of the show and everyone could say their final goodbyes.

  5. Billy Porter is the first openly Gay Black man to win best lead actor in a drama series:

    • Broadway performer, Singer, and Actor Billy Porter made history as being the first openly gay black man to win best lead actor in a drama series for the hit show Pose. Porter gave a speech full of gratitude thanking each and every person who has impacted his life including his Pose cast. With this win Porter is able to show and be an example to other gay black men specifically that nothing is impossible and that there is being progress made when it comes to being represented in spaces such as the Emmy’s and television. This win was not just a win for Porter, but it was a win for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community in knowing that their stories will be continued to be told and that their voices will be heard and recognized.
