About
It all started when…
James Worthy dropped gems on the importance of making moments in music and having patience towards the road to success.
This singer, songwriter and producer has created his own lane within the industry through his strong lyrics, smooth voice and hand-crafted production. Worthy discussed the creative shift he made throughout the 2020 pandemic after he released his EP “Kaleidoscopes” in January.
“It was like a 360, when I dropped Kaleidoscopes, I had a sold-out release event,” he said. “The next month everything changed. I had 20 shows automatically that were cancelled.”
He described the process of regaining his creative confidence throughout such an intense year. “It forced me to go back to the drawing board. I’ve been writing and recording more than usual now,” he said.
A product that came from his creative drive throughout quarantine is his new single “Goldmine” a smooth neo-soul-based song which features singer J.Holiday. “I had the song for almost three years,” Worthy said. He simply described the collaboration as two friends coming together to make fun music.
Throughout his quarantine Worthy was able to self-reflect and got to know himself as not only an artist, but as a person. “I’m not as patient as I thought I was. I’ve been working on that a lot more and it’s actually getting better,” he said.
With him working his debut album Worthy has been in full blown creative mode as he creates his mark in music. “Music is a language,” he said.
He also gave his input on the state of R&B music. “I think it’s creative, only thing I feel that lacks in music nowadays is the lyrical substance.”
Worthy emphasized the value an artist's music should hold within listeners and make them feel something. “We need to put out messages and stories that make sense to people.”
He explained the great amount of passion that should be put into creating musical moments and a legacy.
“I want to change the industry motto. I want more creatives to own their bodies of works and their catalogues,” he said. Worthy aspires for himself and other artists to break the boundaries of music.
With musical inspirations such as Michael Jackson, Sade and Nile Rodgers James Worthy has learned the value of quality music and memorable moments that has shaped him into the artist he is today.
As he plans his virtual tour to give his fans a taste of the melodic sounds of “Blu Leisure” and “Kaleidoscopes” Worthy also took the time to share his advice towards other artists.
“You really have to be dedicated, strong minded and strong willed,” he said. Worthy highlighted the moments he had through his years at The Art Institute of Atlanta where he wanted to give up but realized how far he has come and remained open to expanding his knowledge.
“If someone says I can't do something, I take it as you’re wrong and I’m going to show you I am going to get through this,” he said.
All in all, James Worthy showed how this is only the beginning and that his journey will be a testimony to others who want to achieve the same dream he is working towards. As he continues to make his mark within music, he believes success is possible with a foundation of hard work, ambition and passion.
