It all started when…
Kenya Barris created a new twist on the idea of a traditional black family with his new Netflix series “#blackAF” which told the story of his life as one of the top creators in Hollywood while being a father and a husband.
The show took a blunt approach on what happens after black people have “made it” within the industry, and touches on subjects such as acceptance, upholding a certain standard and humbleness. Viewers got to see a different type of black family that has not been seen before in mainstream media.
The story is introduced through Kenya’s daughter Drea who has created a documentary about her family. The show then began to dive into the different aspects of what it means to “flex” and show off the riches that Barris has obtained which made him think about why he cared about other people’s approval specifically white people.
“#blackAF” has many different elements such as dry humor, witty characters and even quirky episode titles such as “because of slavery” which made the show stand out ultimately with its abnormal approach to what high class black families go through.
With different cameos from stars such as Tyler Perry, Issa Rae, Ava DuVernay etc., there were many different perspectives that were able to be seen within the show about life after success and accomplishments throughout the industry and how to remain grounded all with sarcasm and witty humor.
All in all, the show is an abnormal perspective of black families. There were many different themes and symbolism hidden within each episode that could make viewers gain a different respect for the writing of this show. This series showed the ups and downs of what it means to remain true and grounded all while having a successful career.
