Meet Selah, a young girl who battled between being powerful and being humble. Amazon Prime has introduced a different dynamic to the world with the welcome of “Selah and The Spades,” a story of five factions who run a secret drug operation within high school.  

This movie gave a refreshing feeling to audiences who have never seen something like this in modern day films. With elements of friendship, power structure and morality this film gave a new outlook on coming of age high school-based content. This movie told a different story that touched on the dynamic of power and class status within a high school environment.  

Not only did the film express a different story and portrayed a realistic outline of every day black characters, but from simple things such as camera angles, aesthetics and authenticity the film set the tone of what viewers can expect for the series that will come later.  

With such a star-studded cast that included Lovie Simone, Jharrel Jerome, Celeste O’Conner and Jesse Williams the movie was filled with massive drama and power struggles within a high school society. There were endless messages within the film that intertwined with the everyday struggles of high school students that have maneuvered through the next chapter of their lives. 

All in all, “Selah and The Spades” was a breath of fresh air that the general public needed to see. This movie is recommended and is the type of movie that should be watched more than once to gather every hidden gem within the film. This was a great introduction to what viewers should expect from the series and how this gives hope for more unique and realistic content.
